On October 28, 1886, in New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty was dedicated by President Grover Cleveland, despite the fact that the monument was not a federally funded project.

By running a partially rectified alternating current through the copper shell, the caretakers could make the Colossus shine like a freshly minted copper penny, without loss of metal. Alternately, the corrosion could be temporarily reversed, and the Colossus could then have powdered sulfur applied, so that it turned a rich shade of brown. But, instead, it has the ugly green of copper chloride.
Well, at least it won’t explode in the manner of a Ford Pinto.
