Unlimited Limits

Do politicians understand limits?

They seem to have this notion that they may limit us every which way . . . with no natural or civilized limit set upon the limits they may impose.

Take California lawmaker Scott Wiener.

This state senator (District 11-D.) has introduced a bill to force carmakers to install a gadget limiting vehicle speed to a maximum of ten miles per hour above the speed limit. The murderous gadget would be installed starting with 2027 car models.

I foresee problems. Hence that word “murderous.” Wouldn’t it be kind of dumb to have to go slower than the traffic all around you if that other traffic consists of pre-2027 vehicles going markedly faster than the speed limit?

Also, mightn’t emergency vehicles often have good reason to zip along faster than this gadget-imposed maximum?

Not to worry. The Hill reports that emergency vehicles would be exempt, “and the California Highway Patrol could authorize the system’s disabling in certain other cases.”

Touble is, any vehicle can, at any time, become an “emergency vehicle” — if an emergency requires it to move faster than the Wiener-imposed limit. Do you then call up the California Highway Patrol and ask that the gadget be disabled? What if you have five seconds to act? That’s not much time to beg the California Highway Patrol to give you control over your own property.

I detect hazards in letting government control every aspect of our lives and every movement we make. Can we put on the brakes, please?

This is Common Sense. I’m Paul Jacob.

I will hope that Senator Wiener soon needs to flee a landslide, rock-fall, wild-fire, or bridge-collapse. If he survives, then perhaps he will have learned a lesson. If he does not, then perhaps his colleagues will imagine themselves in his position.

The nanny state strikes again and will be supported by the do-gooders and, in this case, likely the auto insurers.
This is yet another effort to limit personal responsibility and attacking free will, by limiting options and freedom.
Individuals are enhanced and grow by choosing to do good, as opposed to doing bad. There is no gained or lost if one is compelled to take an action.
This incursion will have the unintended consequence of compelling all 2027 autos (why not motorcycles, commercial vehicles as well) to have independent, interactive and controlling navigation systems, clearly at a cost to the purchaser. Who pays? (And who needs it? I refuse to option up to a navigation system because all I need is [better] provided by my cell phone.) Certainly not the good Senator!
Progressing from that platform to governmental and insurance company constant control and surveillance is but a baby step requiring simple programming.
Why not skip the automotive platform and go straight to an interactive implant which could monitor the status of all bodily functions and to make all prohibited or discouraged actions uncomfortable or impossible while relaying live time location. Such would have made the DOJ investigation of January 6 so much more effective and convenient. It could be used for tethering, court bond and order compliance sand apprehension purposes as well.
As a better man than I stated, “Father, forgive them, they know not what they do”.

Government is out to control every aspect of our lives already. That ship has sailed. It’s not just cars and it’s not just for safety. Global warming (I refuse to use their preferred term!) is the impetus for all the controls they want to impose, few of which will apply to them. They’re coming for our appliances. They even want us to stop drinking coffee.
