Emerson was brilliant. The upanishads had been around in Britain and North America for about 30 years when Emerson Incorporated it into his transcendentalist philosophy. We can think of transcendentalism I think as Hinduism plus Western thought. It was Emerson who paved the way for things like yoga in the American experience. Who knew?
