We all like talking about the weather, and one reason “global warming” theory caught on was not because of the science, but because it gives us a “just-so”-type scenario to spice up any conversation.
Here on the East Coast, we’ve endured one of the snowiest winters in years. Elsewhere, the winter’s been moderate.
Must be global warming!
The tendency to make every kind of weather a paradigm-case instance of global warming has become something of a joke. We all know that “weather is not climate,” but we’ve also heard a lot of silliness about how this or that weather proves a coming global warming catastrophe.
Al Gore almost invented the technique.
Last week a quip — a “tweet” — from Senator Jim DeMint made the rounds. He wrote that “It’s going to keep snowing in DC until Al Gore cries ‘uncle.’”
Droll. But the truth remains that one cold snap does not a climate make. What counts for global climate depends on averages, highs, lows, medians, means, and all that.
Knowing this — and knowing that world climate has been much cooler than now as well as much warmer — still leaves me something of a skeptic about the notion that human civilization is the major factor.
Or that warming is altogether bad. An Ice Age, which scientists have been saying we’re overdue for, would be worse.
Brrr. Do I know!

Back when Clinton was finishing up his two terms, I told my wife that I thought Americans were being tested to see just how much they would put up with, just how much nonsense they would tolerate.
These days, it’s hard to read straight news without feeling like one is reading a conspiracy theory. For example, if someone had told you in 2007 EXACTLY what would happen in the next few years, would you have believed it… or accused this person of being a rabid conspiracy theorist?
We’ve been conned into thinking that if we (or Obama, to be more specific) could spend trillions of taxpayer dollars, we could change or control the weather (or the climate, for that matter).
Well, Clinton sold us a bridge to the new century… and Obama has tried to lead us across it. As the Global Warming hoax (or Climate Change, depending upon how deep the snow is) has been exposed, is this bridge now up for sale? Call BR-549?
Nice reference in the title. Very topical.
Paul, I underestimated you. You are now “something of a skeptic about the notion that human civilization is the major factor?” Who are you protecting?
Climate Change has been taking place forever, but as you so well have written in the past, that doesn’t mean human consumption and cow burping has caused a difference in the climate. The earth is a living mechanism. It is capable of making adjustments for such things as automobile fumes and the burning of coal and wood, which has been going on forever. I grew up in the valley of the Great Salt Lake. When I was young, all people burned coal or wood and the smog that hung over the valley was ten times worse during the winter inversion than it is today. I suspect other areas are similar, because until the 1940s and 50s most people didn’t rely wholly on natural gass — and many areas of the country still burn coal and wood. Thanks for your prescient and timely reports.

The science is settled.
I think we can agree that the theory of man made global warming has been thoroughly discredited. If man made global warming was true then the data would supported that conclusion without manipulation.
The scientists involved should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
Politicians who still insist on global warming or climate change should be called to account for their irrational beliefs. If any more political energies or money are spent on global warming or climate change, given our deficits is tantamount to treason.
Everything causes global warm-.…climate change. Or nothing does.
Maybe we ought to call it climate reform.
Ice Ages are caused by giant meteorite or comet Earth impacts.
