Maastricht is now principally associated with the conquest of European nations by a super-state. For example, the people of France were denied a referendum on the Maastricht Treaty, because they were expected then to reject it.
The first country to make the change from Julian to Gregorian calendar was France, in 1582. The last major country to change from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar was — Russia, as the newly-created USSR (1917).
