On June 13, 1774, Rhode Island became the first British colony in the Americas to prohibit the importation of slaves.

Same year as Georgia and Connecticut. Credit the Quakers in Rhode Island because the successful plantation owners in Rhode Island were becoming fabulously wealthy off it. The slave owners there grew food to ship to the cane plantations in the West Indies, which were traded for sugar cane, brought back to Rhode Island, turned into rum, which went to Africa to trade for more slaves, which were sold all over the New World. Money at every turn but they forgot to pay off the politicians. The politicians were certainly as bribable as the politicians of today, even without something equivalent to the Clinton Foundation.
