Spain & Bagehot

On February 3, 1783, Spain recognized the independence from Britain of the United States of America.

Walter Bagehot (pronounced “badge-it”), famed editor of The Economist and author of Lombard Street, was born on this date in 1826.

One reply on “Spain & Bagehot”

I remember a time when all requests for guidance in the pronunciation of “Bagehot” were ignored.

But one cannot trust Britons anyway, which is why for years MTV VJs pronounced “Sade” as /ˈʃaɹdɛɪ/ — the Britwits had written “SHAR day” as guidance.

And, while we’re at it, we are often told that “Halley” is not pronounced /ˈhɛɪliː/ but /ˈhæliː/; however, the correct pronunciation is /ˈhaliː/ (the ‘a’ as in “father”, not as in “cat”).
