Unfortunately, the First Republic of Portugal was characterized by illiberal leftism, and in particular by a confusion of the idea of separation of church and state with fixated suppression of the Church by the state. That fixation provoked a counter-illiberalism, in part because the state was distracted from economic issues, and the First Republic was replaced by an authoritarian, corporatist, third-way regime that merely kept the Church at arms length.
