On July 8, 1839, American industrialist John D. Rockefeller was born. On this same date in 1907, businessman and politician George W. Romney was born. Died on this date, American founding politician, Luther Martin [pictured], in 1826. Martin is famed among founding fathers for refusing to sign the U.S. Constitution, seeing the new compact as unduly centralizing and nationalistic.

According to libertarian author L. Neil Smith of the 74 delegates to the Constitutional Convention, 19 didn’t sign and many signed only reluctantly and only six signed the Constitution that signed the Declaration of Independence which was signed unanimously. There were clearly two factions of founding fathers, one supported Hamilton and Adams and the other Jefferson who argued that the Constitution would bring about in time an all powerful government. Hamilton and Adams won but it was Jefferson that was proven right in the end.
