Greek Monarchy Ended

On December 8, 1974, a plebiscite finalized the abolition of the monarchy in Greece. The last Greek king, Constantine II, had ceased any royal pretensions while in exile on June 1. The December referendum was something of a formality.

Constantine II didn’t get much of an opportunity to be King. His reign began on 6 March 1964. A military coup was effected on 21 April 1967, driven by fears of the socialist left coming to power after scheduled elections. The junta was nominally monarchist, but on 13 December of that same year, Constantine II fled after leading a counter-coup. He was not allowed to return and campaign for restoration of the monarchy after the junta was deposed.
