Liu Xiaobo

Freedom. Freedom is at the core of universal human values. Freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, freedom of association, freedom in where to live, and the freedoms to strike, to demonstrate, and to protest, among others, are the forms that freedom takes. Without freedom, China will always remain far from civilized ideals.

Some years ago, a young woman from Mainland China remarked that America was uncivilized. I told her how may millions of people had died in Mao’s labor camps. Later the aforementioned woman joined the Falung Gong, so I imagine that she developed a more personal sense of how uncivilized the Chinese state keeps her nation.

The essential of civilization is, by the way, reciprocity. The Law of Equal Liberty is one aspect of that, though not the only one.
