For a time, the ACLU was operated in good faith and did a lot of good.
But in 1988 George Herbert Walker Bush opportunistically attacked it, propelling a surge of leftists to join it, who subsequently repurposed it. The ACLU gradually abandoned protecting the speech that those leftists despised.
