Not Term Limited

Swapping out Joe Biden as the 2024 Democratic Presidential candidate is not easy. Standing in the way of a clean switcheroo is his wildly unlikable VP.

How to get Kamala Harris out of the #1 spot, should Joe Biden halt his bid for re-election — which many, many insiders are calling for?

Instead of a shot at the presidency, offer her a historical first: become the first three-term vice president!

She has served one term under Biden. Accept two terms under, say, Newsom!

This would be ideal. It would allow Democratic insiders to promote a white man (which they itch to do) and keep Kamala as a token Person of Color. It would quell the demands of both the intersectionalist-obsessed and African-American voters (though Kamala is not African-American — that does not appear to matter).

This is not much of an offer. True. But it is something. Kamala Harris is not presidential timber. But she is lumber fit enough for a perennial VP slot.

And to the objection that this would run afoul of term limits, the response is easy: the two-term limit, affixed against the Presidency by the 22nd Amendment, does not apply to the VP, only to the P!

Just FYI.

Should Biden be removed before the coming General Election, Kamala Devi Harris will face something analogous to Pascal’s Wager. Sure, if she ran then she’d almost certainly lose, but the race would be her one shot. Only a very unusual politician will give-up what he or she regards as his or her one shot.

Meanwhile, the tokenization entailed in again being offered the position of running mate under a different candidate would offend a great many people, woke and otherwise.

And a promise that she’d be on the ticket in 2028 would have no credibility. The leadership would be preparing a Vice-Presidential candidate more suitable to their purposes.

I think that the Democrats will probably put a woman at the top of the ticket this time. In part, that selection will be to quiet criticism of not choosing Harris, the woman who would normally be the presumptive nominee. In part the selection will be to exploit the pervasive sexism of women voters. And in part that selection will be to turn Trump’s reputation and tone-deafness about women against him.

If Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama wants the Presidential nomination, then it’s hers for the taking. The Democrats might in that case boldly nominate Gretchen Esther Whitmer as her running mate.

If Michelle Obama declines, then Whitmer is the next most likely nominee. G_d help us.
