On April 23, 1985, Coca-Cola changed its formula in its newly released New Coke. The American response was overwhelmingly negative, and the original formula was back on the market in less than three months. A great demonstration of consumer sovereignty.

A friend who is a serious Coke aficionado/addict claims that “New Coke” was simply a ploy. When they returned to the supposed “original formula” they had replaced the cane sugar with a less expensive alternative. While that change would have been noticed by most consumers had it been implemented directly, very few noticed it after the absence of the original for those months.
