Broken Arrow

Off the Georgia coast.

On February 5, 1958, a hydrogen bomb known as the Tybee Bomb was lost by the U.S. Air Force off the coast of Savannah, Georgia. It has yet to be recovered.

Government sources offer conflicting claims about whether the Tybee Bomb was a complete device, or had only a simulated nuclear capsule.

I find hard to believe that the Navy would not have undertaken sufficient effort to recover the device — even if it did not have a nuclear capsule — unless the government have been using the device to bait a trap, or had decided that they wanted the bomb to come into possession of some foreign power.
