For what little it’s worth, in 2001, the Beeb presented a version of Trollope’s The Way We Live Now in which adapter Andrew Davies took a potshot at free trade by having the crooked Augustus Melmotte defend it. Trollope had Melmotte do no such thing.

Opponents of liberty insinuate their attacks at each practical opportunity.

(The script also has an anachronistic use of the expression “pie in the sky”.)
