Switching Sides in Michigan

Paul Jacob on the most compelling race of the midterm election.

“My vote for Senate is going to be with Mike Rogers,” Democratic Michigan Congresswoman Haley Stevens announced yesterday, standing outside a Detroit church with the Republican.

“And I’ll tell you why: Because we have to stand with country,” she emphasized. “We can’t stand with hate. We can’t stand with Hasan Piker.”

Way back on Friday, it appeared Rep. Stevens’ endorsement would be at a different Detroit church and for a different candidate for the U.S. Senate — one Abdul El-Sayed, the Democrat!

Back in August, El-Sayed narrowly bested her in a very contentious Democratic Party Primary, 48.5 to 47.5 percent. The Israel-Palestine issue was perhaps the most consequential with El-Sayed opposing aid to Israel, and Stevens, who is Jewish, more supportive.*

Then recently, two television advertisements — one run by the El-Sayed campaign and one by a SuperPAC supporting him — have sparked controversy on top of already raw feelings in Michigan’s Jewish community. On X, CNN’s Van Jones complained that “the ads from the Democratic side . . . traffic in hate and intolerance — causing alarm for some Black and Jewish voters.”

The SuperPAC’s spot presents a couple grocery shopping, when the wife tells the husband to put back the eggs, which they just cannot afford because . . . “we have to set that $7 aside for killing Palestinians.”

The other ad, this one by the campaign, features Fox News personalities making flattering comments about Mr. El-Sayed along with Tucker Carlson saying he “wouldn’t vote for Mike Rogers at gunpoint.”

Tucker, not living in Michigan, will find no occasion to test his brave claim.

This is Common Sense. I’m Paul Jacob.

* The lingering animosity among Democrats caused Attorney General Dana Nessel, who is Jewish, to skip her party’s convention this year, explaining, “I don’t feel safe going.”
